The first generation of the BMW X5, and indeed the German manufacturer’s first venture into the SUV market, came in 1999. The X5 is a mid-size, executive SUV that set a new standard for its class. Garnering much popularity with its first generation, the BMW X5 was not wholly geared towards being an outright off-roader, it also had a focus on performance and drivability. A rival to the Mercedes M Class, the first X5 was named an SAV, Sports Activity Vehicle. The initial models featured all-wheel drive, with the xDrive and high performance M variants following.
