About Jeep Cars

The Jeep did not start its life until 1940. In World War ll the US Army required a general-purpose vehicle with certain specifications as laid down by the Quartermaster Corps on July 7th 1940. Ford, American Bantam and Willys-Overland were assigned to develop this unique vehicle.

Bantom built the first Jeep in 1940. It was called the Bantam Pilot (BRC-60). Around seventy of these were produced. Ford first produced only two and named them the PYGMY. It was in 1941 they made as many as 3700 units and these were known as the Ford GP. Willys produced 1553 Model MAs. From there the history of Jeep began.

The name `Jeep` was said to be derived from GP short for general purpose this actually dates back to WWl as mechanics would use this term when new vehicles were received for testing. In 1970 AMC (American Motors Corp.) took control of Jeep from Kaiser. AMC introduced the CJ 7 and installed a V8 in the Jeep. They also offered an automatic transmission version along with a Sporty 2-door Full Size Jeep Cherokee and the family Wagoneer station wagon and later smaller 2nd generation Cherokees. In 1984 smaller Cherokees appeared. In 1987 the inline 4 Litre engine was introduced which gave a great power. At this time however, Jeep was taken over by Chrysler Corp having gone out of business.
