About Mazda Cars

Mazda, having been founded in 1920, is a Japanese car manufacturer that gets its name from an ancient god of West Asia called Ahura Mazda. The company originally produced machine tools until 1927, when it switched to manufacturing vehicles. Its first model was introduced in 1931, appropriately named the Mazda-Go.

As was the trend with the majority of car manufacturers, during the Second World War, Mazda was involved with producing weapons for the Japanese military. By 1960 however, the manufacturer released the then-new Mazda R360, followed by engines in 1962, seemingly back on track.

The Cosmo Sport, released in 1967, was a successful line of cars that continued until 1995, using a Wankel rotary engine that Mazda chose to adopt in order to differentiate it from other Japanese and global car manufacturers. By the late 1960s, Mazda saw operations expand to Canada and later the United States of America.

From 1979 to as late as 2010, Mazda was in cooperation with the Ford Motor Company, which saw a collaboration between the two on the development of various projects, including Ford's 1991 Explorer and Mazda 121. Ford at one point owned a controlling share of the company, which oversaw its change of direction in the late 1990s, including the introduction of the logo as used today. Today, Mazda still works with Ford as a strategic partner but operates its own business and continues to release vehicles to the global market.
