About Chevrolet Cars

Chevrolet's story began in the 19th century naming the company after his name. Louis Chevrolet was born on Christmas Day 1878, he was the son of a clockmaker in La Chaux-de-Fonds from Switzerland. When 8 there was an economic slump which drove Louis's family to move to Beaune in eastern France. The family struggled, and at the age of 11 Louis had left school to begin work in the Roblin bicycle workshop. He may have been influenced by his father's principles of precision engineering, but the young Louis proved himself to have a flair for repairing bicycles. In the next few years, Louis developed his skills to now design and build bicycles, along with his proficiency in the saddle, winning many major cycle races - the winnings helping feed and clothe his six brothers and sisters. He then progressed from bi-cycle repairs to becoming a skilled car mechanic in Paris.

In 1900, Louis sought his fortune across the Atlantic, emigrating to Canada to start working as a chauffeur and mechanic. By 1907, Louis was now racing for Buick. Buick had joined up to be part of Durant's General Company of New Jersey which was later to become General Motors. Durant recognised the potential of applying Louis's famous name to a new marque range of automobiles. It was in 1911 the two men joined forces to be known as the Chevrolet Motor Car Company and launched their first car, the Classic Six. Durant's supervision of the future was shown to be correct as the new Chevrolet company went from strength to strength. The Chevrolet brand quickly became well known for its quality, value, reliability and affordability - this fact was underlined by Chevrolet's toppling of Ford's Model T from its No. 1 top sales position, and its further domination in the US car sales for 40 years in a row, from 1936 to 1976.

Today, now one in every sixteen cars on the world's roads is a Chevrolet. The company continues building on its reputation for quality and value with a range of cars specifically tailored for the demands of UK drivers, and recent new launches for 2007 including the exciting Captiva SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). Why not explore the Chevrolet range for yourself - and discover how all our cars embody Louis Chevrolet's truly unique spirit and passion for motoring.
