About Vauxhall
Vauxhall was founded in 1957 by Scottish Engineer Alexander Wilson in Dusian Road, Vauxhall, London. Originally named Alex Wilson and Company, it was renamed in 1897 to Vauxhall Iron Works. They originally built marine engines and pumps. The first car was built in 1903 and cost £136. It had just five horsepower and was steered by a tiller and had two forward gear and no reverse.
In 1905 production was expanding and the company moved most of its production to Luton. They continued to trade under the Vauxhall Iron Works until 1907 when the name Vauxhall Motors was adopted.
In 1911 the C-Type was produced. This was later to be known as Prince Henry. It was a doorless four-seater and was the first sports car from a British manufacturer.
By 1924 Vauxhall pulled out of motor sport to concentrate on every day cars. In 1925 Vauxhall Motors became an owned subsidiary of General Motors which led to a big expansion. In 1931 the first commercial vehicle, The Bedford, came into production. During the Second World War, Churchill tanks and Bedford trucks were produced.
With most families in the 1960s now able to afford a car, Vauxhall enjoyed a boom starting with the Viva. Then in 1975 came the Cavalier followed by the Astra in 1979. Other top sellers include the Corsa, Vectra, Zafira and the Insignia.
