About Rover Cars

Rover is now a dormant British automotive marque that has been used in the car industry from 1904 up until 2005. During this time it switched hands between various companies including the Rover Company, British Aerospace and BMW. The original company has its roots in manufacturing bicycles and motorcycles before expanding into the modern car a little later.

Under British Leyland in 1970, they launched the Range Rover, combining the standard 4x4 Land Rover with the comfort of its saloons to produce a luxurious version. The original Range Rover was powered by the ex-Buick V8 engine. In 1979, the company formed a mutually beneficial relationship with Honda Motor Company of Japan, leading later to the release of the Rover 200 and the Triumph Acclaim. The vehicles during this period are quoted as originally being sourced from Honda.

With BMW taking over the brand in the 1990s, Rover saw a revival in its images and the number of models in production including the 75 model. In 2000 however, BMW decided to split up the Rover Group, selling Land Rover to Ford and the Rover business to the Phoenix Consortium, but maintained control over the brand.

Due to the financial troubles that followed with MG Rover, the company collapsed and the brand was eventually transferred to Tata Motors where it now remains. That said, a considerable number of working vehicles are still out on the road today, bearing the Rover brand.
